The St. Joseph County Police Reserves were first incorporated as the St. Joseph County Police Air Posse in 1983. The Air Posse is comprised of community minded volunteers that are trained by the St. Joseph County Police Department in law enforcement and detention operations.

Reserve officers come from all walks of life with the desire to serve the residents of St. Joseph County. Citizens who want to support their country, state, and county can make a difference by joining the unit.

Reserve officers with proper training, certification and command, as required by statute and policy typically augment the Patrol Division by participating in the following duties.

  • Conduct traffic enforcement
  • Provide traffic and crowd control at special events
  • Stand ready as a reserve force in case of emergency

On average, the SJCPD Reserve Unit consists of 25-30 active members with several senior or more experienced members designated as Field Training Officers.
